Rescue workers had difficulty reaching the impact area of the aircraft due to the inaccessible terrain and snow. However, it was also reported that ultra-Orthodox Jews with Chabad had descended upon the area in an attempt to recover the remains of an Israeli passenger on board the aircraft. Details about the Israeli, Eyal Baum, 39, who at first was described as a “businessman” who lived in Germany, remain sketchy. Later reports indicated that Baum worked for the Mango MNG Holding, S.L. retail fashion company and lived with his wife in Barcelona. Baum’s Israeli family expressed some dismay that they received no official Israeli government word on Baum’s death but had to rely on news reports and a phone call from his company that relayed Israeli Foreign Ministry confirmation of his death. Mango is headquartered in Barcelona and owned by Isak and Nahman Andic, Sephardic Jews who are originally from Istanbul.
Two Iranian sports reporters, Milad Hojatoleslami of the Tasnim news agency and Hossein Javadi, with the Vatan-e-Emrooz newspaper, also died in the crash. They had just covered the Barcelona to cover the Real Madrid vs. FC Barcelona “El Clasico” soccer match in Barcelona and were en route to cover a match in Vienna between the national teams of Iran and Chile. Vienna is also the headquarters of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which is playing a key role in the Iran-P5+1 nuclear negotiations in Geneva.
The French military must have suspected something suspicious from the outset of the plane’s disappearance from radar screens without a distress call. Within minutes of the disappearance of the aircraft, a French air force fighter jet intercepted the Airbus’s last known position.
One of the three Americans killed in the crash was Yvonne Selke, a 23-year veteran employee of the intelligence firm Booz Allen Hamilton, who was contracted to the National Geo-spatial Intelligence Agency (NGA) located near Dulles International Airport in northern Virginia. Selke lived in Nokesville, Virginia. NGA analyzes imagery intelligence from the global network of America’s spy satellites. NGA’s current top priority in satellite imagery of Iran in the final days of sensitive negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program between Iran and the P5+1 nations of the United States, Britain, France, Russia, China, and Germany. Israel has been spying on these negotiations and sharing the intelligence with Republicans in the U.S. Congress opposed to any nuclear deal with Iran.
