The Hebrew word sawtawn (H7854), translated “Satan,” simply means adversary, opponent, or one who resists—never a supernatural being in the Old Testament. In Numbers 22:22, 32, even the angel of Yahweh is called a “sawtawn” as he opposes Balaam’s disobedient journey, revealing that a satan can be a divine messenger sent to confront human motives (cf. Exodus 4:24, where God also opposes Moses). Balaam’s internal covetousness (2Peter 2:15) reveals that the true enemy was his own heart. In 1Samuel 1:6, Hannah’s adversary is her rival wife Peninnah, whose cruelty mirrors other human conflicts (cf. Genesis 30:1, Job 24:21). In 1Samuel 29:4, David is called a potential “satan” by the Philistines—simply an opponent. Likewise, 2Samuel 19:22 shows David calling his own men “adversaries” when they push for vengeance. Most striking is 2Samuel 24:1 and 1Chronicles 21:1, where God Himself is the satan who incites David to number Israel—a test that leads to judgment and repentance. Here, “satan” is not a fallen angel but God acting as an opposer (cf. Lamentations 3:38). Solomon’s peace is described as a time without “satan” (1Kings 5:4), showing the word means an earthly enemy or troublemaker. In 1Kings 11:14, 23–25, God raises up Hadad and Rezon as satans (adversaries) against Solomon for his idolatry, fulfilling warnings from Deuteronomy 28:47–48. The consistent message is that satan (H7854) refers to any opposition—divine, angelic, or human—raised to resist the disobedient. Scripture never presents satan in the Old Testament as a personal devil or cosmic enemy, but as a role played by those who oppose or correct. The true battle lies in the heart, not with a mystical being.
