In this episode we will cover the ‘serpent’ in Isaiah 14:29 thru Micah 7:17, wrapping up the OT occurrences of nachash. My message reveals biblical truths that do not require you to believe in a literal devil to learn some deeper scriptural mysteries. I pray you try to keep an open mind and examine the evidence.

In the last episode, we traced the symbolic and often misunderstood role of the serpent (nachash, H5175) throughout the Old Testament. Jacob’s prophecy in Genesis 49:17 declared that Dan shall be a serpent by the way… an adder in the path, highlighting Dan’s subtle, strategic nature—fulfilled through their surprise attack on Laish (Judges 18:27–29) and in the cunning exploits of Samson (Judges 13–16). These were not supernatural traits but human actions marked by stealth and precision.

We examined how God used serpents as signs of divine authority: Moses’ rod became a serpent (nachash) in Exodus 4:3, and Aaron’s staff turned into a larger serpent (tanniyn, H8577) in Exodus 7:9–12, symbolizing God’s superiority over Egypt’s magic and symbols of power. These signs affirmed Moses as God’s appointed judge—Elohim to Pharaoh (Exodus 7:1), foreshadowing the concept of divine authority given to men (Psalm 82:6, Exodus 22:8–9).

The fiery serpents sent as judgment in Numbers 21:6–9 revealed another layer: serpents as instruments of punishment and healing. The bronze serpent lifted up on a pole became a symbol of repentance and faith—later referenced by Jesus in John 3:14 as a type of His redemptive work. Yet even this image was later corrupted into idolatry (called Nehushtan) and destroyed by King Hezekiah (2 Kings 18:4).

The serpent was also used metaphorically for deception and rebellion. In Psalm 58:4 and 140:3, the wicked are said to have poison like a serpent, speaking lies and refusing truth like a deaf adder. Proverbs 23:32 likens the lure of alcohol to a serpent’s bite—beautiful on the surface, deadly in the end. In Ecclesiastes 10:11, the serpent bites without enchantment, just as a slanderer destroys without warning.

We also considered the crooked serpent of Job 26:13—likely referring to the constellation Hydra—and the piercing serpent Leviathan of Isaiah 27:1, symbolic of earthly kings and oppressive empires (like Pharaoh in Psalm 74:13–14, and the Roman beast in Revelation 13). These serpents represent chaos, rebellion, and opposition to God’s rule—not fallen angels, but carnal rulers and worldly powers.

Finally, we touched on the scapegoat of Leviticus 16, showing how blame-shifting—whether onto a desert demon (Azazel) or a mythical devil—is biblically replaced by Christ, who truly bore our sins (Isaiah 53:11, John 1:29). The serpent, then, is not a supernatural devil, but a consistent biblical symbol for judgment, rebellion, cunning, deception, and divine power.

Now let’s cover the ‘serpent’ verses from Genesis 49 to Ecclesiastes and see if we can find a ‘devil’ or if ‘serpent’ means something else than what we’ve been taught.
